Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is a skincare ingredient that is derived from carbon-rich materials like wood or bamboo. When these materials are heated, they become activated, which means that they develop a larger surface area and become more porous. This makes them extremely efficient at adsorbing impurities from the skin, including dirt, oil, and toxins. Activated charcoal is often used in face masks and cleansers, as it can help to purify the skin and give it a radiant complexion. However, it is important to note that activated charcoal can also be very drying, so it is important to use it in moderation. When used properly, activated charcoal can be an extremely effective tool for achieving clear, healthy skin.

Active Ingredient

The active ingredient in a skincare product is the ingredient that is primarily responsible for producing the desired effect. For example, if you are using a product to treat acne, the active ingredient will be something that has been shown to be effective at reducing pimples and inflammation. Active ingredients can be found in both over-the-counter and prescription skincare products. Some common active ingredients include retinoids, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and glycolic acid. When choosing a skincare product, it is important to read the label carefully to ensure that the product contains an appropriate concentration of the active ingredient for your skin type.

Adenosine

Adenosine is a nucleoside, which is a type of molecule that contains both nitrogen and oxygen. It’s found naturally in our cells, and plays an important role in energy production. When adenosine is used in skincare products, it helps to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. Avocado oil has a wide range of benefits for the skin, including reducing inflammation, moisturizing the skin, and protecting against free radical damage.

Avobenzone

Used in sunscreens and other cosmetic products, Avobenzone is an organic compound that absorbs ultraviolet light. It is classified as a UVA filter, meaning that it protects against the long-wave ultraviolet radiation that penetrates the atmosphere and reaches the earth’s surface. Unlike other sunscreen ingredients, which are broken down by sunlight, Avobenzone remains stable in the presence of UV light, making it an effective way to protect skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Although it is one of the most commonly used UV filters in sunscreen products, Avobenzone does have some drawbacks. First, it is not very water-resistant, so it must be reapplied frequently if you are swimming or sweating. Second, it can be unstable when used in combination with other sunscreen ingredients. For these reasons,Avobenzone should be used in conjunction with other sun-protection measures, such as wearing protective clothing and seeking shade during peak hours of sunlight.

Azelaic acid

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring compound found in whole grain cereals and animal products. It has antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it an ideal ingredient for acne-prone skin. Azelaic acid can help to unclog pores, reduce redness and inflammation, and brighten the skin. It is available in both over-the-counter and prescription formulations. Unlike foundation, which can be heavy and cakey, BB cream is light and sheer. It evens out the skin tone without hiding natural features like freckles. In addition, BB cream contains ingredients that nourish and protect the skin, such as antioxidants and SPF.

Benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is a compound that is commonly used in skincare products due to its ability to kill acne-causing bacteria. It works by releasing oxygen radicals that kill the bacteria on the skin, which helps to reduce inflammation and redness. Benzoyl peroxide is available in both over-the-counter and prescription strength formulas, and it is often used as a spot treatment for acne breakouts. In addition, Benzoyl peroxide is sometimes used as a preventative measure for those who are prone to breakouts. For example, some people use Benzoyl peroxide wipes on their face after workouts to help ward off any potential blemishes.

Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA)

BHA is a type of exfoliant that is often used in skincare products. It is a keratolytic agent, meaning that it helps to break down the bonds between dead skin cells. This can help to improve the appearance of the skin by reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and acne. BHA is also an anti-inflammatory agent, which can help to reduce the redness and swelling associated with acne. It is a smaller molecule than Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) so it can penetrate the skin more deeply. BHA can help to unclog pores and exfoliate the skin.

Biotin

Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin that is often used as a dietary supplement. It is also known as vitamin H or coenzyme R. Biotin is involved in a variety of metabolic processes, including the metabolism of fats and amino acids. Additionally, biotin plays an important role in the health of the skin, hair, and nails. When applied topically, biotin can help to strengthen the nails and promote healthy hair growth. Additionally, biotin-rich products are often used to treat dry skin and scalp conditions. While biotin is available in many over-the-counter skincare products, it is also found naturally in food sources such as eggs, nuts, and legumes.

Blackheads

A blackhead is a type of acne that forms when oil and dead skin cells clog a pores. Blackheads are small, dark-colored bumps that appear on the skin. They are a feature of mild acne, and can also occur on their own. A blackhead is made up of a plug of skin cells and oil that has darkened due to exposure to the air.

Botox

Botox is a popular cosmetic treatment that can temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It is made from a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin, which is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected into the skin, Botox works by blocking the signals from nerves to muscles, causing the treated muscles to relax. This can help to smooth out wrinkles and give the face a more youthful appearance. Botox injections are most commonly used on the forehead, around the eyes, and on the sides of the mouth. The effects of Botox typically last for three to six months, after which time additional treatments may be necessary to maintain results. While Botox is generally safe and effective, there is always a risk of side effects, such as bruising or swelling at the injection site.

Broad spectrum

Broad spectrum sunscreens provide protection against both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. UVA rays are the main cause of premature skin aging, while UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn. Both types of radiation can increase your risk of skin cancer. Broad spectrum sunscreens are formulations that contain ingredients that protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Many contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which reflect and scatter sunlight away from the skin. Some also contain chemical filters that absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then dissipated from the body. Broad spectrum sunscreens are the best type to use if you want to protect your skin from both premature aging and cancer.

C

Ceramides

Ceramides are a type of lipid that helps to keep skin hydrated and plump. They are found naturally in the cell membranes of the skin, and their main function is to keep moisture in and irritants out. Ceramides make up approximately 50% of the lipids in the stratum corneum, or outermost layer of skin. When the skin is healthy, it contains an adequate amount of ceramides. However, ceramide levels can decline with age, exposure to environmental stressors, and certain medical conditions. A decrease in ceramides can lead to dryness, roughness, and a loss of elasticity.

Fortunately, ceramides can be replenished through topical application. Ceramide-rich moisturizers help to fortify the skin barrier and prevent transepidermal water loss. In addition, they can help to soothe irritation and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. For optimal results, look for a skincare product that contains both ceramides and other essential lipids such as cholesterol and fatty acids.

Chemical exfoliant

When it comes to skincare, there are two main types of exfoliants: physical and chemical. Physical exfoliants rely on friction to slough away dead skin cells, while chemical exfoliants use acids or other chemicals to break down the bonds that hold together dead skin cells. Chemical exfoliants can be divided into two further categories: AHA exfoliants and BHA exfoliants. AHA exfoliants, or Alpha Hydroxy Acids, include Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid. These acids work by dissolving the lipids that hold together dead skin cells, resulting in a more uniform and radiant complexion.

BHA exfoliants, or Beta Hydroxy Acids, including Salicylic Acid, are oil-soluble and can penetrate deeper into the pores to help control oil production and prevent blemishes. Chemical exfoliation is a powerful tool for achieving healthy and glowing skin. When used properly, it can help to improve the texture of the skin and promote cell turnover. However, it is important to start slowly with chemical exfoliants and increase the frequency of use gradually, as they can cause irritation if used too often.

Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone)

Coenzyme Q10, also known as Ubiquinone, is a fat-soluble compound that is found naturally in the body. It is involved in the production of energy in cells and is a powerful antioxidant. Coenzyme Q10 levels decline with age, and this has led to interest in using it as an ingredient in sunscreen. The idea is that Coenzyme Q10 can help to protect the skin from damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Collagen

Collagen partners with elastin in your skin to create a smooth texture, structural integrity, and a healthy youthful appearance. Environmental and genetic aging reduce collagen and elastin over time. Collagen is used in skin care to help to create a veil of moisture on the skin’s surface, which visibly reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

Other names: Atelocollagen, Marine Collagen, Hydrolyzed Collagen

Combination Skin

Combination skin can seem to have two different skin types-normal to dry on the cheeks or in isolated parts of the face, oilier and breakout-prone in the T-Zone. It is the most common skin type, and many products are formulated with the needs of combination skin in mind. Try customizing by using a cleanser for normal to dry skin to avoid stripping the skin of moisture and follow with a lotion for combination to oily skin for lightweight hydration. Spot treating with masks and exfoliants can help achieve healthy balance.

Comedogenic

When a product is described as comedogenic, it means that it is likely to clog pores and cause breakouts. Comedogenic ingredients are often oil-based, which is why they are commonly found in makeup and skincare products. However, not all oils are comedogenic. For example, jojoba oil and squalane oil are considered non-comedogenic because they are similar to the skin’s natural sebum. On the other hand, coconut oil and cocoa butter are more likely to cause clogged pores. Therefore, if you are prone to breakouts, it is important to check the ingredients list of products before you buy them.

D

Dihydroxyacetone

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a colorless sugar that is derived from glycerin. When DHA is applied to the skin, it reacts with the amino acids in the dead cells of the stratum corneum, which is the outermost layer of the skin. This reaction creates a browning effect that can be used to darken the skin. DHA is the active ingredient in most self-tanning products, DHA does not provide any protection against UV radiation, so it should not be used as a replacement for sunscreen.

Dimethicone

Silicone is derived from sand and is used in cosmetics to provide an aesthetically pleasing formula, especially in serums and moisturizers. There are different grades of silicone, and cosmetics-grade silicones create an elegant, silky, and spreadable texture in skincare products. Silicone is a desirable ingredient because it can deliver the active ingredients in the product and immediately smooth the look of imperfections. Silicones prevent moisture loss and their properties make them porous (allowing the skin to breathe) as well as resistant to air.

Double Cleansing

Double cleansing is a two-step process that is often used in Korean skincare routines. The first step involves using an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, sunscreen, and other impurities. This is followed by a water-based cleanser to cleanse the skin. The double cleansing method is thought to be more effective than using just one cleanser, as it helps to remove all traces of dirt and debris. Additionally, double cleansing can help to prevent clogged pores and breakouts.

Dry Skin

Dry skin type refers to a skin condition characterized by a lack of natural moisture or oil on the skin’s surface, resulting in skin that feels rough, tight, or flaky. Dry skin can be caused by a variety of factors, such as genetics, environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and aging.

Dry skin may often feel tight after cleansing, so creamy cleansers and/or cleansing oils are a great choice for this skin type. Supplementing with and eating omega-3’s can be helpful for dry skin. If you are new to using facial oils, it is best to start with a light oil and gradually introduce more into your skincare routine.

Free Radicals

Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cells, causing inflammation and premature aging. The body produces free radicals as a response to environmental stressors like pollution and UV exposure. Free radicals can also be generated by unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as smoking and eating processed foods. While the body has its own mechanisms for combating free radicals, this repair process can be overwhelmed by too many oxidative stressors. When this happens, free radical damage accumulates, leading to visible signs of aging, such as wrinkles and dark spots.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect yourself from free radicals. This includes using sunscreen to limit UV exposure, eating antioxidant-rich foods, and avoiding smoking and other unhealthy habits. By taking these precautions, you can help reduce your risk of free radical damage and maintain healthy skin.
